Electronic cigarettes are becoming an increasingly popular alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes. Although they do not contain the numerous hazards that are found in regular smokes while delivering nicotine,e cigs do not eliminate the risk associated with using nicotine. If you choose to make the shift to vapor smoking,it can be a healthier alternative but does not eliminate the inherent dangers of nicotine.
Why Is Nicotine Dangerous?
Nicotine has been found to be a large risk factor associated with heart attack. It will raise your blood pressure, speed up your heart, and is considered a vasoconstrictor (ie it makes it more difficult for your heart to pump blood through your arteries). Nicotine also is a catalyst for your body to release stores of fat into your blood and can result in gout by restricting blood flow to your extremities.
Nicotine Addiction is Hard to Beat
On the good hand, nicotine has not been proven to be a carcinogen. It is,however, one of the most addictive substances on earth. Trying to beat nicotine addiction has been likened to trying to quit hard drugs such as heroin and crack cocaine. Due to the addictive nature of nicotine, electronic cigarette companies market their products to people who are regular smokers and not to non-smokers.
Nicotine Can Be Deadly
Nicotine is a poisonous substance. If your child or pet were to ingest your e liquid,it could prove to be fatal. If you already have high blood pressure or a heart condition,it can be harmful to your health potentially resulting in heart attack. Most companies will recommend that you keep your e liquid locked away so that your family can not access it when you’re not around. If you are making your own e liquid, you will also need to pay special attention to wearing personal protective equipment to avoid splashing the liquefied nicotine on your body. A lethal dose of nicotine for a child can be as little as 10mg where for an adult it will normally be between 30 and 60 mg.
How is Nicotine Measured in E Liquid?
When you buy e liquid for your electronic cigarette, the e juice will come in bottles measured in ML with specific nicotine contents measured in MG. For example,0mg,12 mg,18 mg,and 36 mg with some variation between manufacturers. When you buy a bottle of e liquid,if it is labeled 18 mg it will have 18 mg of nicotine per 1 ml of e juice by most manufacturers. As a comparison,a traditional tobacco cigarette contains approximately 12 mg of nicotine.

Indeed Nicotine is a Dangerous drug, one cigarette has enough nicotine to end your life. Most of the substance goes up in smoke though and you do not die. The cost associated with smoking e cigarettes is enourmous as well. You might end up spending more as a reult of e cigarettes than you were compared to real ones. This is because you are smoking more to get the desired nicotine levels you would probably get from one cigarette. That and E cigs feed your habit they do not address it. I am 18 days cold turkey and have never been happier.
I have to diagree with Michael,i have been smoking for 38 years and as soon as I bought my e-cigarette,I quit smoking completely, something that was very hard for me to do taking other quit smoking products. I buy the 36 mg e-liquid and it gives me the same satifaction as if I were smoking the real thing.
Michaels’response is typical of people who have never used an e-cig product. These products have saved many lives. I have COPD (look it up),and my doctor is glad that I’m using this alternative. I haven’t had an asthma attack,or needed my inhaler in quite awhile now. Just because YOU quit cold turkey, doesn’t mean that this method isn’t a viable solution to others. They are so popular now, that even gas stations are now selling disposable e-cigs.
I agree with Stephanie. I have been a dedicated smoker for 10 years now. After purchasing a high nicotine dose electronic cigarette,I am happy to say hat kicking the habit for lack of better words has been easy. I am ecstatic that such a product exists and don’t mind spending a bit more knowing that it is less harmful than cigarettes. The only worry i have is that it is so easy to pick it up and smoke more often that I normally would. That being said,I feel it is a good step in the right direction and I am a happy Esmoker
t
im from the uk where a pack of cigarettes costs. £6.50 (=$10)
the equivalent in ecigs is £2 so much cheaper
and healthier
go electric!
There are lots of other lifestyle factors that are bad for your health- excessive alcohol, fatty food, caffine, shift work, stress, pollution etc etc. So in the big picture whats a little nicotine vapour if it stops people from also ingesting the other multitudes of harmful chemicals that come with smoking. Lets face it we can’t aim for perfection. I’m all for harm minimisation. Thumbs Up for a step in a better direction. I haven’t touched a real cig in over a year thanks to my e cig. I am now running 10kms again on a regular basis,my skin looks great again,I’ve lost weight and feel so much healthier. I don’t expose my kids and others to second hand smoke,my house, clothes and car no longer stink. I’m saving a fortune and i don’t have to feel constantly guilty about smoking cigarettes. Yeh It’s not perfect but I’m a lot helthier even with my vaping then a non smoking, junk food eating binge drinker. I’ts all about putting things in perspective.
Bek:you have said everything I am wanting to say, even though I have only been e-ciging for just 5 weeks. I feel great! and I am looking forward to the 1 year milestone. Cheers!
Well just been on the ecig for 2 wks now and not had a real cigarette! Trouble has been since I gave up smoking I have had bronchitis:( so will be interesting to see when I am well how I cope with the ecig! Keep fingers cross:)
I was a 20 year smoker, that had not missed a day of smoking EVER,even when pregnant. I ordered my ecig and have not picked up a cigarette since. I share the same opinion as most here:they are healthier and less expensive. I spend in a week what I use to spend on cigarettes in a week. I also enjoy the benefit if not smelling like smoke for my husband (who hates smoking) and my children.
*I spend in a week what I use to spend in a day (not week)
I am 63 years old,and had been smoking since I was 15. My mother passed away last summer, and I vowed after watching her struggle with enphysema,COPD,etc.,that I would quit smoking. As of 1 September 2011,I have been cigarette free. After a couple of weeks,I started using the ecig, and have been using it ever since. I no longer crave cigarettes at all. The only drawback is because it is so accessible, unless I put it out on the back porch and only smoke it out there,I seem to be using it too much.
I was a smoker for 30 years ( 3 packs a day) I tried everything to quit and nothing worked, except this e-cig. I can say it really helped me quit smoking. It will be 1 year on January 8,2012. I feel so much better now.
I don’t know,I hesitated because you never know what will come out years later about how bad these things were. BUT,husband bought me one for a long road trip…..to have a few drags before retiring, and not worry about second hand smoke,or the bed catching fire from a dropped cherry,or the ash,the butts…..hey,so far it’s great. Got a little head rush in the beginning, and they are much heavier….but so far,I only use a few regular cigs throughout the day. I have a feeling that as I am grossed out more and more with the ash and butt scenario,I could easily be using these alone. The price difference is amazing.
Yes,you could smoke more, but I find I puff less,as I’m not forcing myself to finish an entire cigarette so as to not waste the money spent on an entire pack.
I just smoke what I need.
That’s a good thing for me,as I used to be a two pack a day smoker.
AND,maybe I won’t smell like cigs eventually.
IF I find out years from now that they really were bad,oh well. I lived in three different cities that were nuclear reactors, and have been surrounded by professional crops using insecticides. What really am I avoiding?
I have to say,I am 30 years old,my husband is 38,he has been smoking alot longer than me,I have been a smoker for 11 years,we purchased the Green smoke electronic cigarettes, and love them. We have a 3 year old little girl, and I want her to have her mommy and daddy for a long time. So many times we have tried to quit with the patches, gum, lozenges, cold turkey, you name it. If this is the way to do it,I’ll take it
I love the Idea that you can step down your nicotene little by little. I would recomend them to anyone that has tried to quit or really wants to quit. I don’t feel guilty anymore. Everyone who is using them,I give all my love to you and wish everyone luck with them
Happy e-smoking!!!!
I am 50 yo and have been a pack a day smoker since I was 16 yo. I started on the e cig (Joye eGo) 2 weeks ago and have not touched a cigarette since. It is amazing and so much cheaper. Kudos to the persons who invented these. It will save so many lives. My husband started on the e cig a few days after me and is no longer smoking cigarettes as well. Our home and we smell better,no 2nd hand cigarette smoke complaints from our grown kids. Life is Great!!!
Been totally off Cigarettes for 3 years now. I find the smell of cigarettes now repulsive and love my e-cig. It was trial and error at first to find one that had a good enough battery to last a day and I have tried numerous liquids until I found the ones I really like. I am still concerned a little that I have an addiction albeit safer in many ways than conventional cigarettes. I do feel there needs to be legislation because the dangers of leaving e liquid around pets, kids, etc are not documented well enough in the public domain. Again I found these out myself over time. Plus added none of us actually know what we are vaping? The fact we are told by some retailer who is in turn told by their Chinese exporter that the product is of good quality does not necessarily mean it is. We are so desperate to believe that something we enjoy doing is safe that we hoodwink ourselves. That said i am over the moon that I have broken the cycle of smoking conventional cigarettes. Overall i do feel a lot healthier.
